Updated WCAG 2.2 Standards Elevate Attention to Website Accessibility

In today’s digital-first world, ensuring that your website is accessible to everyone is more critical than ever. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 are the latest standards aimed at making digital content more inclusive for users with disabilities. These guidelines focus on four key principles: making websites perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust (POUR). By adhering to these principles, businesses and organizations can ensure their online presence is accessible to people of all abilities.

WCAG addresses various disability issues, including:

  • Visual Impairments – low visions, blindness, and color blindness
  • Hearing Impairments – deafness and hard of hearing
  • Mobility and Physical Disabilities – motor skills impairment
  • Cognitive and Learning Disabilities – dyslexia, memory issues and ADHD
  • Neurological Disabilities – seizure disorders
  • Speech Disabilities – those who cannot speak or require assistive technologies
  • Age-Related Disabilities – adjustable features that can benefit older adults

Recent rulings from the Department of Justice (DOJ) emphasize the importance of website accessibility, especially for municipal websites. These rulings reinforce that websites must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Municipalities, as well as businesses, risk significant legal and financial repercussions if their websites are not accessible.

Mason Digital recently designed and programmed several municipal websites with a strong focus on accessibility, including websites for the Town of Greece, Town of Evans, and the Town of Perinton.

Non-compliance with Accessibility Guidelines can result in lawsuits, hefty fines, damage to brand reputation, and the alienation of individuals who rely on accessible websites for vital information and services.

Beyond compliance, accessibility sends a strong message about your values. An accessible website shows your commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and community, creating a positive perception of your brand. Customers and stakeholders are more likely to trust and support organizations that prioritize equitable access for everyone.

At Mason Digital, we prioritize accessibility by making it part of our website development Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) to ensure our clients’ websites comply with WCAG 2.2 standards and create an inclusive, compliant, and trusted digital presence!
